Hold & Drag Stability: Testing Continuous Switch Contact & Micro-Dropouts

One of the subtlest hardware failures occurs when a mouse button registers single clicks normally, but abruptly releases contact while dragging files, selecting text, or controlling weapon spray. Use this mouse click test if broken tool to verify electrical continuity under continuous hold pressure.

Why Mice Drop Files During Dragging

Inside mechanical microswitches (such as Omron, Kailh, or Huano), spring leaves maintain physical contact under finger pressure. When metal fatigue or surface oxidation occurs, slight variations in finger pressure cause the contacts to momentarily part, logging an unintentional release dropout.

How to Test If Mouse Is Broken

Press and hold your left button while circling the cursor across the pad for 10 to 30 seconds. If the counter increments the Micro-Dropouts fault count or displays a red warning pill while your finger remained down, the switch spring tension is compromised and requires replacement.
